Thanksgiving Feed - Pream (1955)

Can't have coffee without cream...or maybe creamer. I couldn't find any information about Pream. Nothing more than a few old ads, that is. I liked the old coffee carafe in this one, though I can't imagine using non-dairy creamer in cake or tomato soup.

Preparation for the Big Night - Chase and Sanborn Coffee

Chase and Sanborn was a new brand to me, but they're an old American brand. The company came into existence in 1862 and it claims to be the oldest coffee company in the US. They're probably best known for an infamous ad featuring a husband spanking his wife.

In the early 80's Sanborn was bought up by Nabisco and eventually by Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group in 2006. Now it's just another brand you'll find at WalMart.

National Irish Coffee Day

If you went by the crowd-sourced genius volume of all-things-true known as Wikipedia, you'd believe that the first Irish coffee was "...conceived after a group of American passengers disembarked from Pan Am flying boat on a miserable winter evening in the 1940's." I'll admit that Wiki's answer is pretty, it has a lovely feel and I'd love to believe that some wry, Irish character tailored the first Irish coffee out of kindness and inspiration, but for me the doesn't pass the smell test.

The problem I have is that it's easy to find similar drinks made with other alcohols which are much older than the proposed birthday of the Irish coffee. For an example, in 1888 a bar tending book called the New and Improved Illustrated Bartender's Manual printed the following recipe:

At it's root, Soldier's Camping Punch represents the theme of all coffee drinks. It features strong, sweet coffee mixed with high-proof liquor. In the case of the punch the two liquors involved are rum and brandy, but it it's hardly a stretch to imagine a barkeep or host substituting whatever high-proof liquor of modest vintage was at hand. Sure, the fabled Joe Sheridan may have been the first to record the recipe, but the inspiration surely came from one of a slew of existing bar tender's favorites.

Regardless, Happy Irish Coffee Day. Pour yourself a strong one, drink to good ole' Joe, and watch the snowflakes fly. It's good to be warm inside and out.

Happy National Coffee Day

Happy National Coffee Day! Here's to that wonderful, caffeinated beverage that lets us say no to that early morning voice that says "kill...kill...kill..."

Oh coffee, early morning accelerator, fog lifter, kick starter of the workday. What would we do without the magical bean? Well, to be honest we'd probably be a lot less jittery and we might get a little more sleep!

While you're waiting in line for your double, grande, venti, macca-chi-whatever with or without extra whatever say a word of thanks to all those who brought you the blessed little beans that are about to help move you out of neutral this morning. And while you're waiting, how about a little morning music to celebrate the day. Take it away, Mr. Ros!
