Sometimes it seems that we believe everything we’re going
through in our complicated, modern age of cell phones, email, i-this-and-that,
and 60-hour work weeks is new to the face of the Earth. We’re more connected,
more aware, and more informed with our twenty four hour news cycles and social
media. The problem is, when you delve into old media, you know the stuff that
was originally printed on dead trees, you’ll find many of our “modern” worries
were showing up almost a hundred years ago. From out of control climate (and
no, I’m not a global warming denier) to dwindling water resources, you’ll find
it all in the pages of most of the popular news magazines of the time.
Take road rage as an example. A quick googling will show it’s
a popular topic and it certainly seems modern, what with automobiles and all. Go
back to 1939 and this ad for Postum, and you’ll see that everything new is old
again.
