Abba-Zaba sounds like something a tight-clad man wearing a
cape would yell before flying out a window to face the evil Sultan of Mars and
his army of doom. Instead this 20’s era candy’s name has a much more odious
origin. The long defunct Colby and McDermott copyrighted the Abba-Zaba bar in
1922 and (at least at that time) the wrapper and box featured a racially
insensitive image of an African native complete with grass skirt and spear. The wrapper most
likely changed over to the modern yellow and black checker pattern when
Cardinet acquired the company.
Currently you can find the taffy and peanut butter flavored Abba-Zaba bars manufactured by Annabelle. They're supposed to be good, though I couldn't say.
